Dorothy's Story
Dorothy Doherty is a Vancouver-based mixed media artist working in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics.
She received her art education from the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art & Design) and Capilano University. She holds an MA in Art History from the University of Victoria, and a PDP (Art Education) from Simon Fraser University.
She resides in Burnaby, paints at home, and works with clay at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby.
Dorothy Doherty is particularly concerned with the effect humans have on the natural environment, to the extent that many forms of life no longer exist. Her work straddles the line between abstraction and realism. It examines a variety of issues, including urban decay, global issues and the beauty of the world around us, whether in man-made structures or the mysteries of nature.
Her artwork is the byproduct of contemporary urban living. Inspired by an innate curiosity and a desire to recycle responsibly, her body of work is a platform for experimentation and discovery. Informed by the wide-spread consumption of paper, and the fast pace of modern life, the resulting art is the consequence of an encounter with the materials and the desire to resolve material, aesthetic and creative challenges.
