Donna's Story

Donna is a retired Burnaby teacher (B.Ed 1972 UBC math major) a set-taught artist and active member of the FCA.

She has worked with textiles since the age of 8, when her mother taught her how to sew. She has worked with various textile mediums including quilting, which she has done  for over 48 years.

Donna has exhibited her work in 20 solo exhibitions in the Lower Mainland and has been accepted in many juried group shows in P.E. I., Ontario, Manitoba Saskatchewan, Alberta, Washington State and Hawaii.

Donna has worked as a visiting artist and Aarti in residence creating many multi medium painted legacy quilts.  She has presented many workshops to teachers and art groups.

In 1991, I had a near death experience. When I recovered I decided I wanted to study art. So I enrolled in drawing and 4 years of watercolour painting lessons. As watercolour painting is one of the most challenging mediums to work in, I started to experiment with watercolour painting on fabric (a medium I was more familiar with). As my watercolour on fabric grew, do did my painting on paper. In 2000 I started to experiment with watercolour on canvas.

Today I work in all three mediums. I often paint the same image on each medium. As my fabric is hand embroidery and hand quilted, my needle becomes my pencil to create line and texture.
