Ana-Francisca's Story

Ana-Francisca Haas was born in Romania and emigrated with her family to Vancouver in 1995. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Simon Fraser University in 2003 and worked as a programmer until the birth of her first son in 2011.

She has been drawing and painting since she was very young. Prior to coming to Canada she attended an Art School. After finishing university she sought to improve her drawing by attending life drawing classes at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

I can guide the paint up to a point, but it always does its own thing too and it's wonderful to discover.

The Process

I work in watercolor because I like the fact that I can never perfectly pre-visualize what the final painting is going to look. I can guide the paint up to a point, but it always does its own thing too and it’s wonderful to discover.

I enjoy painting portraits the most. When I look at a face, I look at it as a whole, but I like breaking it down and exploring each feature piece by piece as I paint it. I paint my children often and they are also the models for my painting for the STRIDE event.

This painting is influenced by the pandemic, but I wanted to focus on a positive aspect of it and that is the fact that having no choice but to either play with each other or alone, my sons became better friends. I wanted to capture their relationship as they adapted to a new reality.
