Beatrix Schalk

Beatrix's Story

Beatrix has lived most of her life in the metro Vancouver area. She has been a Burnaby resident for more than thirty years and lives with her family in the Heights.

She knew from an early age that she was meant to be a maker and an artist. Formally educated in Fine Arts at Emily Carr College of Art and Design (now Emily Carr University) and Interior Design at BCIT, Beatrix went on to establish herself as a Scenic Artist and Set Designer in the local Film and Television industry, where she has had a day job for over two decades.

Her insatiable curiosity about materials and their characteristics, both physical and conceptual, as well as her interest in design and architecture, continues to drive her exploration of a variety of 2D and 3D mediums. Clay, with its tactile quality and ancient elemental process reoccurs as her material of choice for creative expression. Whether the piece is functional or not, or somewhere in-between, this medium allows her the possibility to fulfil her desire to connect with the view/user and inspire engagement with the material at an intrinsic level.

Beatrix has exhibited her work in group shows at the Burnaby Art Gallery, The Amelia Douglas Gallery, The Craft Council of British Columbia, Livingroom Arts, Harmony Arts Festival and Stride.
