Didem's Story

Didem Cindik was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Her relationship with art began in childhood but was interrupted during adulthood due to professional commitments in other fields, including public relations. After questioning her career path, she returned to artistic practice and explored various disciplines such as relief work, mural painting, glass painting, and sculpture.

Between 2007 and 2019, she worked professionally as a tattoo artist, operating her own studio in Turkey. Alongside this, she produced mask designs and participated in a group exhibition in Istanbul in 2017, presenting abstract acrylic works and canvas-based mask pieces.

After moving to Vancouver in 2019 and becoming a mother in 2020, she began focusing primarily on watercolour painting, developing a deep connection with the medium. In 2024, she participated in the Women’s Day Exhibition organized by the Turkish Canadian Society and a showcase with RAW Artists Canada. She continues to create with passion and envisions expanding her practice into handmade ceramic masks in the future.

My work is based on tile compositions inspired by traditional Turkish ceramic (çini) patterns, primarily referencing works from the 15th to 18th centuries. With a desire to carry this historical heritage into the present, I combine these traditional patterns with contemporary motifs such as fruit, birds, and skeletal forms, creating a visual dialogue between past and present.

The core theme of my practice is the wish to preserve a deeply rooted cultural legacy and to express my longing for my roots while living in a new geography. Drawing becomes both an act of remembrance and a way of reconnecting with my cultural identity.

I work with 100% cotton cold-press paper, using a double zero brush and watercolour as my primary medium. This detail-focused technique allows me to reinterpret traditional patterns through a contemporary and personal lens.
