Dorothy Doherty

Dorothy's Story

Dorothy Doherty is a visual artist who works in painting, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics.

She received her art education from Vancouver School of Art (currently Emily Carr University of Art & Design) and Capilano University. She holds an MA in Art History (University of Victoria) and a PDP (Simon Fraser University).

She is a life-long resident of British Columbia, Canada, spending the majority of her life in and around Vancouver, BC.

Dorothy taught ceramics and design at Cariboo College, Williams Lake, and worked as an art specialist in School District #44, North Vancouver. After retirement she attended Capilano University to learn how art has changed over the years.

She works in her home studio, and fires ceramics at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

Dorothy is particularly interested in the natural world. Her work straddles the line between abstraction and realism. It examines a variety of issues, including urban decay, global issues and the beauty of the world around us — whether in man-made structures or the mysteries of nature.

In our rapidly changing world she has gone from a simple appreciation of life around us, to one of concern with the gradual extinction of many life forms on this planet.
