Jillian's Story

Over the course of her long and diverse career, Jillian photographed many genres before discovering her true specialty – the art and dynamics of group photography. After running Ridgeview Photography for 30 years, she now focuses on teaching photographers of all levels and creating photographic art that celebrates the beauty of our world.

An avid volunteer, Jillian currently serves as Team Canada’s Co-Captain at the World Photographic Cup, helping to support our photographers on an international stage. In her spare time, she can be found experimenting with iPhone photography, traveling, sipping chai lattes (or margaritas), and helping others preserve their family photos.

Everyday Motion: An ICM Exploration of Burnaby

These fine art photographs were taken in Burnaby using an iPhone and its long exposure feature to transform ordinary neighbourhood sights into captivating works of art. Each image begins with familiar objects and scenes - then is reimagined through motion, light, and time. View the art first and notice what feelings or impressions it evokes. Then, explore the accompanying photo guide to discover the Burnaby location behind each piece - places you’ve likely walked past countless times, now seen in a completely new light.

The series was created using ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), a photographic technique that involves deliberately moving the camera to blur or abstract the image. The result often looks more like an impressionistic painting than a traditional photograph, emphasizing mood, rhythm, and emotion over detail.

By using this technique on familiar neighbourhood scenes, the images invite viewers to slow down, look again, and find wonder in the everyday. What may once have seemed ordinary becomes poetic - revealing that even the most common sights hold the potential for art, if only we choose to see them differently.
