Marilyn and David's Story
Marilyn (fiddler) and Dave (guitarists) have been playing Irish traditional music together for the past ten years. We really enjoy the social side of being able to play with friends.
We miss playing with people in-person! Zoom workshops and concerts have helped keep music alive during the pandemic, across borders and timezones.
Since Irish music revolves around the melody, once people know a set of traditional melodies, usually learned by ear, they can just sit down and play together. Music sessions usually involve playing music, learning new tunes, chatting and a few drinks.
When the two of us play together, the fiddle carries the melody and ornamentations, and the guitar reinforces the harmony and rhythm. The guitar is in DADGAD tuning, since lots of Irish tunes are in the key of D. We’ll play tunes that are from several centuries to several years old.
