Sabrina's Story
Sabrina Anne Modder is an artist and illustrator born and raised in East Vancouver, now living in Burnaby.
A creative all her life, she went on to graduate from the Design & Illustration program at Capilano College in 2002, transforming her talent into a career as a creative director. This design influence can be seen in her artwork.
In 2018, Sabrina and a close coven of friends founded the Back Alley Art Collective. The collective held annual shows, and continues to host art nights and workshops. Sabrina has sold works though the Anonymous Art Show in North Vancouver, and in 2021 participated in the East Van Culture Crawl.
She is excited to shift focus from design to artist. When not in the studio, she can be found outside photographing stumbled-upon scenes while walking with her first and beloved dog, Tigresa. She enjoys animation, dreams and getting wrapped up in the universe.
I am influenced by the bold colours and strong lines seen in graffiti, street art and animation.
My work often depicts the lost, broken, and discarded. But somehow – while these scenes can be seen as dreary or worse, not seen at all – life’s colours and placement naturally inject richness into everything, into everyone.
My hope is that these pieces feel familiar or even nostalgic, so as to rekindle a relationship with things once forgotten. Everyday situations can feel unremarkable until we realize that so many of us share such similar experiences. Conversely, my work should suggest some chaos… disorganization… whether through sketchy line-work or unclear narratives.
I’d like build a collection of large ‘painted sketches’ that demonstrates the vulnerable challenges we face as a society; from the housing crisis to substance abuse, from isolation to abandonment; it is my goal to bring light and colour to some of our darkest moments.
