Sema Nur's Story
Sema Nur Yavuz is a Turkey-born, Vancouver-based painter and art educator. She holds a degree in Painting and has completed pedagogical formation training. Working across oil painting, watercolor, acrylic, ceramics, and mural art, her practice centers on self-portraiture as a way of exploring personal narratives, everyday moments, and emotional transitions through a realistic and intimate visual language.
Yavuz spent two years teaching art to children at an art center in Turkey, an experience that deeply informs her approach to art as both an expressive and educational practice. Currently working as a freelance artist in Vancouver, she creates site-specific murals for clinics, children’s spaces, and public environments. Alongside her studio practice, she leads watercolor and acrylic workshops for communities, focusing on creativity, connection, and collective expression. Her work seeks to transform individual stories into shared visual experiences.
My work focuses on figurative self-portraits and intimate scenes drawn from everyday life - fragments of personal spaces, moments, and emotions. Through these visual narratives, I explore themes of identity, self-discovery, emotional depth, and healing.
I am guided by a deep belief in the transformative power of art. Personal experiences form the emotional foundation of my practice, while nature provides balance, softness, and quiet inspiration. I work with oil paint, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media, allowing each material to serve a distinct purpose. Acrylic supports spontaneity through its fast-drying nature, while oil paint creates depth, realism, and fluid color transitions. Watercolor is applied in transparent layers, contributing to a sense of lightness and softness.
Soft tones and subtle contrasts define my visual language. The eyes often become the focal point in my portraits, inviting viewers into a moment of reflection and emotional connection.
